Bottled in Bond is a bourbon law applied to rum — one distiller, one season, one distillery, four years in a federally bonded warehouse, 100 proof — and The Auditor calls Privateer's the ideal bottle to bring bourbon drinkers into rum. Privateer is the poster child for the American rum resurgence: Andrew Cabot walked away from a tech CEO job in 2008 to revive the New England rum tradition of his 18th-century privateer ancestor, opening in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 2011; Maggie Campbell, trained at the Germain-Robin brandy house, built the distillery's reputation as head distiller and made it the first American rum in the Habitation Velier series. The Bottled in Bond is 100% Grade A molasses, fermented and double-distilled in a single season, aged a minimum of four years in full-size new charred American oak in bond, and bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof) with no sugar, color, or additives. The Auditor found warm caramel, oak spice, toasted brown sugar, and a slight guava on the palate, finishing with oak spice, toasted marshmallow, and black pepper — good core rum flavors with good new-charred-oak influence, and at the price something to keep on the shelf all the time. Expect the new-oak vanilla and char that make Privateer read whiskey-adjacent, over a clean, rich molasses spirit with real texture. Honest note: it's new-oak forward and bourbon-like by design — Jamaican funk seekers should look elsewhere. For a Rum Old Fashioned, a rum Manhattan, a bourbon drinker's first rum, or neat.
