Product description

Chicago Pneumatic RCP-C581VS — 5 HP Iron Series Two-Stage, 80 Gallon, 700 RPM

The number worth starting with on this machine is 700 RPM. That is how fast the cast iron pump turns, and it is the slowest figure in this part of the Chicago Pneumatic range. Everything people like about this compressor — how long it lasts, how much noise it makes, how much oil ends up downstream — follows from it.

Piston speed is what wears a reciprocating compressor out. Rings rub, bores go oval, valves fatigue, and all three happen per stroke rather than per hour. A pump that produces its output at 700 RPM has taken a different route to the same delivery than a fast, light pump: bigger bores, more mass, slower motion. The result is a machine that is quieter to stand next to, gentler on its own oil film, and less inclined to carry oil mist into your air lines — which matters enormously if you are spraying paint, and matters at least a little to every air tool you own.

The cost of that decision is weight. This is 580 lbs of compressor, and it is meant to be bolted down and left alone for a decade.

All cast iron, and what that changes

The Iron Series pump is solid cast iron rather than an aluminium body with iron liners. Iron holds heat and holds shape. On a two-stage pump — where the second stage is compressing air that is already hot from the first — resisting distortion at temperature is what keeps ring seal consistent over years rather than months. It is also the reason the machine is heavy, and the reason it needs a level, solid pad rather than a patched corner of the floor.

Chicago Pneumatic's own summary of the series is short and honest: all cast iron pumps, low RPM for quieter operation and long life, and a warranty that covers the whole machine. This model is that argument in its five-horsepower form.

What it delivers

18 CFM at 100 PSI, two-stage, up to 175 PSI maximum, into an 80 gallon vertical ASME tank.

Read those together rather than separately. The delivered-air figure at a stated pressure tells you what the compressor can sustain; the tank tells you what it can lend you for a moment. An 80 gallon receiver behind an 18 CFM pump is a deliberately generous ratio — it means the pump is not switching on and off constantly during intermittent work, and short bursts of heavy demand come out of stored air rather than out of the motor's duty cycle. Cycling is wear, and a big tank is the simplest way to buy less of it.

Will it fit, and what to hand your electrician

The vertical tank keeps the footprint small: overall length is recorded as 37", and the machine weighs 580 lbs. Give it level concrete, room around the belt guard for cooling air, and a route in that can take the weight — this is a forklift or pallet-truck item, not something you walk into position.

Power is 5 HP on 208-230 Volt, 1 phase. A magnetic starter is fitted, so the motor has thermal overload protection out of the box. Breaker size and cable gauge depend on the length of the run and on your local code, so those are your electrician's call, not a number we should be printing for you. The tank outlet is 3/4".

What is on you: the pad, the electrical supply and the disconnect, and getting the machine off the truck. Sorting all three before the compressor ships is the difference between an installation and an incident.

Perfect for

The one- or two-bay professional shop that wants a machine bought once, not replaced in five years.

Paint and refinishing work, where a slow-turning pump carrying less oil into the air stream is worth real money in filtration and rework.

Serious home and hobby workshops attached to a house, where noise is the constraint that actually decides which compressor you can live with.

Anyone replacing a fast, light single-stage unit that has been rebuilt twice and is due a third.

What is fitted

From the listing's own feature list: an all cast iron two-stage pump rated at 700 RPM; an 80 gallon ASME vertical tank; a magnetic starter; and the 2 year full warranty described below. No loose accessories are itemised on this listing, so none are claimed here. Ask us and we will confirm what is in the crate before you order.

Overall width and height exist in our data as bare numbers with no unit recorded, so we have not printed them. We would rather answer that question properly by email than publish a guess.

Certification, stated honestly

The receiver is described by the manufacturer as an ASME tank — the pressure-vessel standard, and the certification that matters if your premises are inspected or your insurer asks what is holding 175 PSI in the corner of the workshop.

Our data records no third-party electrical or product-safety listing for this model, and we are not going to write an acronym the product's own documentation does not claim. If a particular listing is a requirement where you are — a fleet policy, a municipal inspection, an insurance schedule — tell us which, and we will confirm in writing whether this compressor carries it before you buy.

Shipping and delivery

This is a freight item, shipped within the lower 48 states, and it arrives crated on a pallet. You will need a forklift or a dock to receive it; if you have neither, choose terminal pickup and collect it with a trailer. Residential delivery is possible and carries a residential fee.

Do the inspection while the driver waits. Note anything — a crushed corner, a split crate, a shifted pallet — on the bill of lading before you sign, and photograph the pallet before it is broken down. A clean signature is very difficult to argue with afterwards.

Warranty

2 year full warranty. The manufacturer's phrasing is that it covers everything, including valves, with no fine print — and valves are the component most often carved out of a compressor warranty, so that inclusion is the substantive part rather than the marketing part.

If something does fail, leave it assembled. Pumps, motors and pressure switches normally have to be inspected in the state they failed in, and taking the machine apart first is the most reliable way to turn a good claim into a declined one. Photograph it, stop using it, and call us.
